Akila’s Story

Growing up in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, Akila always had a sense of adventure and a strong desire to help people.

After years of hard work and dedication to her peers, colleagues, and patients, she achieved her dream of becoming a doctor. She’s still not entirely sure how she ended up in Red Lake, Ontario, but the community is very glad she did. Known for her compassion, commitment, and advocacy, Akila quickly became one of the most beloved members of the community.

In her spare time, she loves reading, swimming, and travelling—especially when it means heading back to Nova Scotia to spend time with her family.

Josh’s Story

Josh was born and raised in Kenora, a small city in Northwestern Ontario. After studying to become a teacher, he moved to Red Lake to begin his career. Shortly after meeting Akila, Josh landed his dream job back home in Kenora. Ready to start his next chapter, it didn’t take long for him to convince Akila that the winters are much milder three hours south (this claim is still under review).

Josh is a loyal friend who rarely passes up the chance to catch up with his pals over a game of hockey, soccer, or golf.

He now teaches at his high school alma mater, Beaver Brae, where he brings plenty of energy, laughs, and the occasional questionable joke to everyone who crosses his path.

Our Relationship

After a few unread DMs, Akila and Josh finally met on November 13, 2022 at the infamous curling rink in Red Lake. Between constant laughter (mostly Josh’s jokes) and a shared love of adventure, it didn’t take long for something special to grow.

Our love is easy and comfortable. We support and nurture each other, laugh often, and face life’s challenges as a team. Together we’ve grown stronger and continue to learn from one another every day.

We love spending time with friends and family, exploring new places, and relaxing at home with our dog Tucker.

Together we’re building a life full of love, laughter, and adventure, and we’re so excited for everything the future holds.
